Architects of Justice

This project confronts a different aspect of sustainable architecture, one beyond construction. This is an intervention that addresses the subject of the wholesale recycling of buildings in our society. A school in Alexandra, Johannesburg was in desperate need of library facilities. Faced with problems of logistics and bureaucracy, a solution and possible prototype was established by using shipping containers. A facility for children, which by virtue of its function offered an opportunity for insouciance and colour. The building does not disappoint. Considering the complications of time and delay, the architects have solved with an immediate need, a place for children to read and play. The project may also be adapted in other contexts in the country where similar conditions exist. The building explores the balance between providing much needed facilities, and investigating other avenues of architecture, in which not building more, may be the best solution yet.
