Timber is usually limited to smaller building elements like trusses and decks, however the only timber buildings that are complete are by timber frame specialists who generally provide a design-and-supply service. As a result, timber has been relegated to smaller scale structures, while bigger structures are reinforced with concrete or steel. The challenge remains to change the construction industry’s perceptions about wood. This research is based on multi-disciplinary training and approaches to practicing architects and structural engineers. The investigation proves that timber is more sustainable than certain other building materials.
