Hempcrete, a fully biodegradable material that comprises hemp hurds, holds several advantages when used for building construction, says Wolf Wolf, founder of Cape Town-based architecture firm Wolf and Wolf. Hempcrete is used in the building industry as fibre for quilt insulation and, more recently, in the growing hemp board industry.
Hempcrete is a non-toxic building material with thermal insulation qualities and thermal mass well above regulation standard. This leads to energy savings of between 50% and 80% compared to conventional building material, according to Wolf.
On top of the insulation benefits, hempcrete also has carbon sequestration properties, the process by which CO2 is removed from the atmosphere and held in solid or liquid form to lessen or reverse global warming.
