Cape Town based Tsai Design Studio have managed through their Vissershok Container Classroom to instil early childhood development and in the long run, academic excellence by transforming an old container into a classroom.
In 2012, during Design Indaba Expo, Tsai Design Studio, a young and dynamic creative design studio based in Cape Town presented their 12 metre long recycled container called Vissershok Container Classroom. This recycled container was then transformed into an independent classroom big enough to comfortably accommodate 25 Grade- R pupils between the ages of 5 and 6.
Built with limited means and budget, the container classroom continues to offer more than just a ventilated learning classroom. It also incorporates a playing area which was cleared for this purpose, a growing area for growing vegetables and a stepped seating area where pupils gather for lunch and to socialise.
Initiated during Woolworths’ annual design competition ‘Making the Difference through Design’, Vissershok Container Classroom was the winning proposal by high school student, Marshaan Brink. The Design Studio then took it further and developed it to a completely independent classroom and eventually, an all round centre of excellence.
Tsai Design Studio was established in 2005, and since then has been at the centre of a multidisciplinary approach to generate creative solutions in a number of design fields including architecture, interior design, furniture, and graphic design.
